The homes in ancient Inca society were build as story and a half houses with gable ends. The Incas did not use
tiles or shingles to cover their homes, but instead depended on thatch made of grass or bushes. The thatch was tied
to purlins and was kept from blowing away by being tied to the ends of the projecting roof pegs. This idea of roofing
was perfected by the Incas and has not appeared to have ever been used by anyone else. The reason for this unusual
design was because the area where Inca architecture flourished was on a plateau that was treeless and wind-swept. Another
interesting note is that the doors of the Inca were tall, and were rather wide at the bottom but became narrower as you continued
moving up.
